Details: About the Author Lisa Lutz is the author of The Spellman Files, a New York Times best-seller; Curse of the Spellmans, a national best-seller and nominee for both the Macavity and Edgar? Awards for Best Novel of 2008; and the critically acclaimed Revenge of the Spellmans. Although she attended UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, the University of Leeds in England, and San Francisco State University, she still does not have a bachelor's degree. Lisa spent most of the 1990s hopping through a string of low-paying odd jobs while writing and rewriting the screenplay Plan B, a mob comedy. After the film was made in 2000, she vowed she would never write another screenplay. A motion picture adaptation of The Spellman Files is in development with Paramount Pictures.Ari Graynor's theater credits include Little Dog Laughed, Brooklyn Boy, Dog Sees God, Spanish Girl, Fall, King Lear, and Into the Woods. Films include For Your Consideration, The Great New Wonderful, Game 6, Imaginary Heroes, and Mystic River. On television, she has appeared in Veronica Mars, The Sopranos, and Law & Order: SVU. Product Description Izzy Spellman, a twenty-eight-year-old amalgamation of Nancy Drew and Bridget Jones, launches her career as a private investigator while working for the firm of her outlandishly dysfunctional family. A first novel. 150,000 first printing. From Publishers Weekly In a family of private investigators, privacy is nonexistent. The Spellman parents spy on the kids just as much as the kids spy on the parents. But after 28 years of this, middle child Isabelle wants out of the family business. Her parents agree, but only if she solves the 10-year-old cold case of a missing teenage. Amusing and entertaining, Lutz's tale of investigation, family and love is given an additional bemusing touch by Ari Graynor. She grasps the material and Isabelle's resigned disposition of both loving and loathing her family. She captures Isabelle's more emotional responses and the youthful tone of her younger sister, Rae. However, she is occasionally too breathy, literally blowing into the microphone. While these come off as sighs, they still seem to cross that line between narration and interpretation. The abridgment of some of the book's various subplots increases the speed of this already fast paced comedy-mystery. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From AudioFile Ari Graynor narrates this debut novel, telling the story of 28-year-old Isabel Izzy Spellman, who is struggling to stay sane while working for her familys private detective agency. Its difficult to imagine a better fit than Graynor for recounting Izzys madcap adventures, romantic disasters, and attempts to locate her missing sister, whose unhealthy habit of recreational surveillance has gotten her in trouble more than once with the police. With normal behavior in her family including going through other peoples trash, snooping outside hotel rooms, trailing men in San Franciscos Tenderloin district, and doing background checks on all of her future ex-boyfriends, Izzys story is one funny adventure after another. Graynors aplomb, dynamism, and sassiness help make this first novel a laugh-out-loud treat. S.E.S.
